Ibn Sina was born around the year 980 in Afshana, a village near Bukhara — then a great Persian city of the Samanid dynasty, in what is now Uzbekistan. He became the towering polymath of the Islamic Golden Age: physician, philosopher, astronomer, and poet in one working life. By his own account he was practicing medicine by eighteen; after he treated the Samanid emir Nūḥ ibn Manṣūr, the royal library of Bukhara was opened to him, and he read it whole.1,2

He wrote constantly — some 240 of perhaps 450 works survive, spanning logic, mathematics, medicine, and the Book of Healing, one of the largest philosophical encyclopedias ever composed by one person. He spent his last years in Hamadan and Isfahan as court physician and, for a time, vizier, and died in Hamadan in 1037.1,2,3

The Canon of Medicine

Around 1025 Ibn Sina completed the Canon of Medicine — five books gathering everything medicine then knew, from Hippocrates and Galen through the Persian and Arabic physicians, tested against his own practice. Translated into Latin in the twelfth century, it became the standard medical text of both Europe and the Islamic world for roughly six hundred years, still on university syllabi at Montpellier and Louvain into the mid-1600s.1,3

What made it more than an encyclopedia was its insistence on evidence. The Canon sets out formal rules for testing a new drug — that it be tried on the human body and not judged from animals alone, on uncomplicated cases, with attention to consistency and reproducibility — rules physicians now read as an early articulation of the clinical trial.5 It catalogued the properties of roughly 760 medicaments. It recorded that some diseases pass from person to person and through water and soil, and counseled isolating the sick. And it treated the patient as a whole — diet, sleep, climate, and the passions of the mind alongside the disease.3,5

He was wrong about plenty — the Canon is built on humoral theory, as every medical text of its age was. What lasted was not each answer but the method: observe carefully, write it down systematically, test the remedy, revise the text. Generations of physicians on three continents learned medicine from a book that modeled that discipline, and pieces of it — the drug-testing rules, the contagion observations, the whole-patient view — still rhyme with how medicine is practiced now.3,5

The recognition endures quietly: a crater on the Moon carries the name Avicenna, and UNESCO awards an Avicenna Prize for ethics in science.6,7
